Small town server gets even with dine-and-dashers, informing their mothers by the time they arrive home: 'You need to come back and pay for your meal'

When you're living in a small town, news travels fast. This server witnessed a group of misbehaving kids dine and dash at the local diner. It did not take long for her to figure out exactly who they were and, even more importantly, who their parents were.

Whenever I first visited the small, suburban town where my partner is from, it did not take long before I realized that everyone knows everything about everyone else. Even when we're just taking the dog out for a walk, everyone is suddenly aware who's back in town, what they're up to, and who they're dating. I can imagine how that feeling can be communal if everyone actually likes one another, but in life, that's rarely the case. If people start to feel like they're all up in each other's business, what once seemed like an intimate neighborhood can quickly transform into something suffocating and toxic.

However, that intimate community where everyone is loosely connected by only a few degrees of separation can come in handy, as it did when this server contacted the parents of those unruly miscreants.

  • There's a decent point to be made here about how the intersection between a small town community and what the author refers to as “Mom's social media” platform can allow for news to spread quickly.
